Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme sell doughnuts fried in 100% partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. When a customer, John Greenwood, wrote to them to enquire about this, they responded:
In 2003, we began exploring a wide variety of alternative oils in an effort to reduce the level of trans fats in our products. To date, we have not yet been able to identify a viable solution that would allow for the reduction without compromising the taste and quality standards that we have to meet and our customers expect. We maintain strong partnerships with academia and suppliers to remain current on new innovations in this area and will continue to look at oils that are the result of new technologies. We do want our customers to be able to make informed dietary decisions. We have taken steps to include the trans fat information in our nutritional listings in our retail stores and on our website. We have made all the necessary labeling changes to comply with the new FDA labeling requirement for packaging. Our customers are, and will, remain top of mind in all that we do.
We will continue to follow the findings of leading organizations on this matter and listen closely to the FDA's recommendations as further conclusions are made.
Mr Greenwood also spotted the claim on the FAQ page that:
"Krispy Kreme doughnuts are cooked in 100% vegetable oil."
Although the "nutrition" page states:
"Our doughnuts are cooked in 100% vegetable oil shortening (partially hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oil)."
As for their statement (above) that "We have taken steps to include the trans fat information in our nutritional listings in our retail stores and on our website", that appears to be untrue. No information on trans is provided.
