Quorn
Quorn is a fungus-based textured meat subsitute product, made into a wide range of end products bearing some resemblance to, ordinary chicken, turkey or pork, sausages, pies etc.
Originally developed by Marlow Foods, the company including the Quorn brand has been acquired by Premier Foods.
A number of Quorn products have hydrogenated oil listed as an ingredient. Quorn have now written to tfX supporter Jo Copp (22 August 2006) to say this is being taken out. The letter begins with the usual feeble justification for hydrogenated oil (excised):
... Nonetheless, we are keenly aware of consumer feeling towards hydrogenated fats, and are currently committed to their replacement by non-hydrogenated alternatives, by conducting a systematic evaluation of alternative oils in order to select the one which maintains the product eating quality. We are happy to report that we successfully replaced the hydrogenated fat in our sausages & burgers with vegetable oil some time ago. We have also amended our pepper steak, lamb grill, chilled deli bacon style & turkey style recipes in the same way, however, the packaging may not as yet reflect this as yet, and is currently being updated. We have also removed the hydrogenated fat in our creamy mushroom pies, cottage pie, fillets in white wine sauce & lasagne. Please be advised that our Technical Department is charged with replacing hydrogenated fats in any of our other products which currently contain small amounts of hydrogenated fats as soon as possible, and we hope to be able to write to you again to let you know when we have been successful.
