Kelloggs
Although most Kelloggs products do not contain hydrogenated vegetable oil, some do. These include:
- Elevenses (cereal bar)
However we are heartened by their recent commitment that "We will be reducing or removing trans fats over the next few years without compromising taste, texture and shelf life" (from their letter, below).
Policy statement
Thanks to Mark Sanders for writing to Kelloggs and forwarding their response (26/11/2004):
We are encouraged by health experts to eat less fat, particularly saturated fats and trans fats*. Levels of trans fats in the UK diet have fallen over recent years and are now below the target intake level (of 2% energy).* The majority of Kellogg's breakfast cereals are low in fat, including saturated and trans fats. There is also very clear evidence that foods such as Kellogg's Corn Flakes which are high in carbohydrate and low in fat, play an important role in helping people reduce fat intakes and maintain a healthy body weight.Kellogg's is always looking for opportunities to enhance its products to better meet consumers' wants and needs. Among the many enhancements currently under review are possible alternatives to hydrogenated oils in the few foods where we use them. We will be reducing or removing trans fats over the next few years without compromising taste, texture and shelf life.
*Trans fats are a type of fat found naturally in some foods. Hydrogenation is the process by which fats are made more solid at room temperature.. During the process the structure of some of the fats is changed and 'trans fats' are formed, Hydrogenated fats help to preserve the taste and appearance of foods.
